He attended the district schools, York Academy, and the State Normal School. While attending these various institutions he employed his vacation periods in teaching. Graduating from the Academy of York and the Normal School he took up the study of medicine as his life work, matriculating at Jefferson Medical College. He graduated from this College and received his degree of M. D. in 1870, and then began the practice of his profession in the town of East Prospect, Pennsylvania.
In the autumn of 1873 Dr. Joseph A. Reed appointed Dr. Hengst Assistant House Physician to the Western Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane at Dixmont, Pennsylvania. He continued in this position until the spring of 1877, when he removed to Pittsburgh and resumed the practice of medicine. He was President of the Staff of Physicians at Mercy Hospital for almost twenty years. He was one of the original staff of the Childrens Hospital of Pittsburgh, was also on the staff at the Eye and Ear Hospital, and was connected with St. Francis Hospital. Dr. Hengst was a frequent contributor to the medical magazines, being an authority in his special line of practice. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church of York, Pennsylvania. After coming to Pittsburgh he became a member of the Bellefield Presbyterian Church and served for many years on its Board of Deacons. Later he became connected with the East Liberty Presbyterian Church.
