He received his preparatory education at Covode Academy, the State normal school at Indiana, Pennsylvania, and the Pennsylvania State College. He took his medical course at the University of Pittsburgh, from which institution he was graduated in 1904 with the degree of M. D. Meantime, before he entered medical college, he taught school for several terms in Indiana County. Upon his graduation he began the practice of his profession at Marion Center, remaining there for two years, and in 1906 settling at Heilwood. Dr. Gourley was a member of the Indiana County Medical Society, of the Pennsylvania State Medical Society, and of the American Medical Association. Socially he was a Mason, belonging to Indiana Lodge, F. & A. M.
