He studied law in Florida, and obtained his law degree. He then moved to Hampton, Virginia, upon becoming Secretary to the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. His advancement in this field was steady and rapid. He was responsible for the construction and administration of Lewis Engine Research Laboratory in Cleveland, Ohio, until his retirement.
He died of cancer a short time after he retired.

She attended a finishing school in Winchester, Virginia. After leaving school she went to visit Murtland relatives in New Jersey. Ray Sharp, of Hampton, Virginia, was visiting next door. From that chance meeting their marriage evolved.
