He received a common school education and possessing the talent for a machinist he turned his attention to acquiring that trade. A natural machinist and a skilled workman, he built wagons, pit-cars and anything in that line. His business grew to large proportions and he was quite successful, coming to own six acres surrounding his place of business and half a dozen dwelling-houses. Mr. Smith was a democrat and with his wife belonged to the Lutheran church.
