He read law with Senator Cowan, was admitted to the bar in 1847, and was successively a law partner of Judge Clark, Judge Logan and Hon. Welty McCullough. He served as district attorney and collector of internal revenue.

He died from paralysis at the Girard Hotel, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, leaving only one child, his daughter, Ada.
