In his earlier life followed farming, but later became a member of the distillery firm operating under the name of Fry & Mathias. He was an "Andrew Jackson" democrat and a valiant worker for his party. He was a member of Westmoreland Lodge, No. 518, A. Y. M.; Urania Chapter, No. 192, H. R. A. M.; and Kedron Commandery, No. 18, Knights Templar; also of St. Clair Lodge, No. 53, A. O. U. W.
