He learned the cigarmaking trade after completing his education and then operated a cigar factory at Skidmore.

He was educated in the schools of Brier Hill in Hickory township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, and at an early age, when just out of school, learned the cigar-maker's trade, and then became a partner of his brother in the manufacture of cigars.
He was a member of the East Brook Cornet Band.
