He was educated at the National Normal School, Lebanon, Ohio, and at the University of Wooster, and was graduated from the Western Theological Seminary in 1888. He commenced teaching as early as 1871, and began work as president of Grove City College, Grove City, Pennsylvania, April 11, 1876.
