Although reared in the peacable principles of the Society of Friends of which his parents were members, he was among the most active patriots of his section from the inception of the Revolutionary struggle. He was a major of Maryland militia; rose to the rank of colonel in the Continental line, and was some time purchasing agent for the army on the eastern shore of Maryland.
