He grew up in the primitive surroundings characteristic of the region in his early days, and had little chance to attend school. When a boy of eleven years he went to live with his brother Thomas, at North Point, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, remaining with him two years. Then for two years he was with Joseph Uncapher, in 1847 going to Indiana, Pennsylvania, to learn his trade. He served an apprenticeship at tailoring, with Wilson Long, for four years. Thence he went to Blairsville, Pennsylvania, before the railroad was extended from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, continuing there for one season. He then attended school for a time, going to the old academy at Indiana. Returning to his old home locality he located in 1857 at Perrysville, where he built a hotel in 1868, and in addition to operating same has engaged to some extent in the mercantile business, carrying a stock of confectionery and notions. He also continued to follow his trade, his combined interests serving to bring him a comfortable income and establishing him among the substantial men of his vicinity. Even when past eighty years of age, he was active and well preserved, and his excellent memory enabled him to recall many interesting experiences of the early days. He became widely known in his various connections, business and otherwise. He never aspired to office of any kind, though interested in politics as a member of the Democratic party. In fraternal association he was a member of the I. O. O. F., having belonged to Amor Lodge, No. 608, at Perrysville, for over twenty-five years. [HIC 1913, 1546]
