He was educated in the public schools Plum Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and like his father and grandfather he followed the occupation of farming. He commenced independently with a farm of one hundred acres, making a specialty of growing grain, and of stock raising. Politically he was a Republican, and served as road inspector. He was a member of the Presbyterian church for many years and served as elder.
