In the same year he sent several samples of the newly discovered petroleum to London, England; in December, 1861, he purchased 3,000 barrels for that market. In 1864 he became one of the Board of Directors of the New Lisbon, Ohio, Railroad Company. In 1865 he was elected President of the Pennsylvania Division of the Atlantic & Great Western Railroad, the same year a Director in the Mercer Mining & Manufacturing Company and also of the Shenango & Allegheny Railroad Company. On the consolidation of the railroads of the Atlantic & Great Western Company, in 1866, he was elected Vice-President, and the same year was appointed a Director of the Pithole Railroad Company. When the Atlantic & Great Western passed into the hands of a receiver in 1867, Mr. Shryock was made his assistant, and in 1868 became President of the Shenango & Allegheny Company. He was elected President of the Meadville Water Company in 1874; in 1880 was elected President of the Meadville Railway Company.
