General Notes: Husband - Rev. Thomas M. Shanafelt, D.D.


He graduated at Bucknell University at Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, and Rochester and Crozer Theological Seminaries, entered the Baptist ministry. He was ordained at Muncy, Pennsylvania, in 1864, and served during the war in the Twenty-eighth Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers. He became pastor at White Pigeon, Michigan, in 1867; was pastor at Monroe, Hudson, and East Saginaw; was for several years secretary and treasurer of the Michigan Baptist Education Society; was, beginning in 1874, secretary of the Michigan Baptist State Convention. He was sent by the Michigan Department of the G. A. R. to the National Encampments held at Minneapolis, Minnesota; Portland, Maine; San Francisco, California, and St. Louis, Missouri. He was elected at Minneapolis in 1884 chaplain-in-chief of the national organization. He was a member of all the Masonic bodies in existence, and was a thirty-second degree member of the Scottish Rite. He was later pastor at Three Rivers, Michigan.
