He attended the common schools of Warren County, Pennsylvania, until the age of fourteen when he entered the Chamberlaine Collegiate Institute at Randolph, New York; he commenced teaching school at the age of seventeen and when nineteen entered Mount Union College where he was a classmate of Secretary of State, Hon. Philo C. Knox; graduated at the Cincinnati Medical college in 1877; practiced his profession until 1893; when he was appointed Microscopits of the United States Department of Agriculture, and in 1916 was stationed at Denver, Colorado.
