His education, that of a general nature, was completed by a course in the University of Western Pennsylvania, after which he taught school for five years. He then began the study of law, and was admitted to the bar in 1900, at which time he engaged in general practice. For some years his home was in Clairton, Pennsylvania, although he maintained offices in Pittsburgh. He was solicitor of the borough of Clairton beginning when that place received its municipal charter, and also served on the school board of the borough. He was a Republican in politics, and held membership in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
