He was born in Jefferson township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and passed his boyhood days in Elizabeth township, Allegheny County. He attended the common schools, and, afterward, Duff's Business College, Pittsburgh. He and his wife began their married life on a farm in Union township, Washington County.
The home place contained 108 acres of very fine land, a portion of which was used exclusively for the raising of fruit.
Mr. Gault was a Democrat in politics, and was elected to various offices of trust in his township. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
