The area where he was born was at that time part of Venango County, Pennsylvania. It later became a part of Forest County. When he was about two years of age his parents moved to Rockland township, Venango County, where they later died. He was educated at a common school, and reared as a farmer. He moved to Salem in the fall of 1866, where he resided for about eighteen months, and then moved to Cranberry township. His parents and grandparents were among the first settlers of Venango County; they came from Centre County.
