General Notes: Husband - John Gaston

He came from New Jersey to Washington County, Pennsylvania, with his wife and family of four sons and two daughters, and purchased of John Cox, Nov. 30, 1790, the tract " Belmont," upon which Gastonville was later built. He also purchased land adjoining. He built a hewed log house and lived in it until his death, at the age of eighty-seven years.
Mr. Gaston gave to each of his sons, William and James, one hundred acres of his land. They eventually sold their shares of the property to Samuel, another son, and both removed to Ohio. Samuel remained upon the homestead. Joseph, the fourth son, went to South Carolina, where he married and subsequently removed to Ohio, where he died.

The Gaston family originated in France and during the days following St. Bartholomew, escaped to Scotland. Later, three brothers of this family crossed the Atlantic Ocean to America and then separated, one locating in Massachusetts, a second seeking the milder climate of North Carolina, while the third was attracted to eastern Pennsylvania. It was his son Samuel who founded the Washington County branch. He acquired three farms in Union Township, near Finleyville and the place now bears the name of Gastonville, having been named in his honor. He died in this village when aged eighty-six years.
