He was born in Cranberry township, Butler County, PA, and grew to manhood in his native township. He married and located on the farm in Cran­berry township, later occupied by his son Benjamin W., where they resided for many years. He held the positions of supervisor, collector and school director for many years, and was one of the respected citizens of his community. Some years after the death of his first wife, he remarried, and later removed to Allegheny City, where he resided until his death.
He had eight children with his first wife. [Another source states, seven; four still living in 1895.]
