General Notes: Husband - William C. Gardner

He received his preliminary education in the district schools; when eighteen years of age, he entered the Tuscarora Academy in Juniata County, Pennsylvania, and was under the instruction of Prof. J. H. Shumaker. His family then removing to Ohio, after a few years spent there in assisting his father on the farm, he returned to his native county and taught school during the winter terms. Eager to perfect himself in the profession he had chosen, he entered the Kishacoquillas Academy, and then the State Normal School at Millersville, and was graduated from the latter institution in 1862. He thereupon went to Lancaster, enlisted in the army for the nine months' service, and was assigned to Company E, One Hundred and Twenty-second Pennsylvania Volunteers, under Capt. (Prof.) A. R. Byerly. He was in active service until May 17, 1863; he was engaged in the second battle of Bull Run, the battle of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. He returned to Mifflin County, resumed teaching, and has followed his profession to the present time. He taught four years in the State of Illinois. Mr. Gardner was actively interested in politics and in local enterprises. He adhered to the Democratic party. In 1875, he was elected county superintendent and served one term.
