He was born on the family farm in Center township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, and attended a subscription school in the neighborhood. He followed agricultural pursuits all his life on the homestead. He was a member of the M. E. Church at Homer City. In political association he was a Democrat, but he never took any part in public matters.
