She was born and reared in Butler, Pennsylvania. After graduation from Butler High School she attended Westminster College, New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, from which she was graduated in 1906 with the degree of A. B. She studied law in the office of her father and was admitted to the Bar of Butler County April 1, 1925, when she became a partner for the practice of law with her father. She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Butler.
