He was born on the old family homestead in that part of Carroll township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, known as “The Horseshoe.” He remained on the home farm until he was united in marriage. He and his wife resided on the old place about two years after their marriage, when he erected a house where they thereafter resided, on a portion of the old estate. He owned eighty acres of the old farm, and conducted a profitable business. Politically he was a Republican.
