He graduated at the University of Pennsylvania in 1760; was appointed professor in the academy at Newark, Delaware, in 1761; was licensed to preach by the Second Presbytery of Philadelphia in March, 1763. In August, 1763, was invited to a church in Baltimore, Maryland, and in 1765 was ordained its pastor, in which relation he continued until his death. He was a prominent man in the Presbyterian church.
