The house where he resided was one of the first built in the township, and one room in it was the birthplace of three generations. The cellar, which was long one of the best to be found in the country, was built as what was supposed to be a modern improvement. He was educated at the old-fashioned subscription schools, and later began farming, which he followed many years and was successful. He eventually became the owner of two fine farms consisting of 350 acres of well improved land.
He was a Republican in politics; was elected county commissioner in 1859 and served three years through the most exciting time of the Civil War.
