He received a common school education, after which he entered the distillery in Penn township conducted by his father and Mr. Mathias under the name of Fry & Mathias, and after the death of his father he continued in the employ of Mr. Mathias as distiller. In religion and politics he followed in the footsteps of his father, holding membership in the Reformed church and casting his vote for the candidates of the Democratic party. He belonged to the Knights and Ladies of Honor, Greensburg Lodge, No. 607, having been a charter member of the lodge instituted at Manor, and transferring later to Greensburg.
