General Notes: Husband - Richard Fruit

He was reared and educated in Jefferson Township, Mercer County, PA. His early life was spent upon the old homestead farm. In 1854 he engaged in droving, in which business he operated very extensively for twenty years. He thereafter was engaged in the saw and grist-mill business, purchasing the old mill property that belonged to his father. He was also one of the most extensive farmers of Mercer County, managing some 800 acres. In 1874 he was appointed sheriff, by Gov. Hartranft, to fill the unexpired term of Sheriff Pew, and at the expiration of his appointment was elected to the same position and filled the office three years longer. He has also served in all of the important offices of his township. Politically he was a leading Republican, was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. [HMC 1888, 916]
