General Notes: Husband - James Satterfield Fruit

He was first educated in a select school at Transfer, and in 1887 entered the Grove City College, from which he was graduated in 1892 with the degree of A. B. For the succeeding three years he taught at Rose Point Academy, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, as its Principal, and then for a like period became connected with the faculty of McElwain Institute at New Lebanon, Pennsylvania, serving as principal there. The record which he made in connection with these institutions so commended him to his home people that in 1899 he was elected superintendent of schools in Mercer County, serving in this capacity for two terms, from 1899 to 1905. He was then called to the Edinboro State Normal, but resigned after a few months to accept a more responsible and important position as principal of the Thirteenth ward (north side) public schools of Pittsburg. In politics he was a Republican, was identified with Sandy Lake Lodge, No. 433, A. F. & A. M., and in his religion was a Presbyterian. [HMC 1909, 1030]
