General Notes: Husband - Joseph R. Stauffer

After attending the common schools he went to Mt. Pleasant, Pennsylvania, and engaged in the mercantile trade, entering into an active business life, becoming interested in many great and prosperous enterprises, viz.: Coal, coke, banking, iron and steel business. In 1873, in connection with his brother, he began to operate coal mines, and built coke ovens on the home farm, Upper Tyrone township, Fayette County, and carried on these operations for more than thirty-three years under the style of Joseph R. Stauffer & Company. The banking business was perhaps the most attractive of all. In 1882 he became interested with Peter S. Loucks, in Scottdale, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, in a private bank known as The Scottdale Bank, and continued this successful partnership for more than twenty-three years, and in 1906 he purchased the interest of the estate of Peter S. Loucks, deceased, from the executors, and continued the bank as the sole owner, with capital and surplus of $200,000, and total assets more than $1,000,000. In 1887 he interested him-self, in connection with other local men of Scottdale, in the iron and steel business, and developed most successfully the Scottdale Iron and Steel Com-pany, by the management of Mr. Robert S. Kemp, who was brought from the best iron and steel district in England. This iron and steel company was sold out to the American Sheet Steel Company in 1901, and later taken over by the United States Steel Corporation. He was vice-president of the First National Bank, Connellsville, Pennsylvania, and director and stockholder in a number of banks and trust companies in Fayette and West-moreland counties, and largely interested in mining and manufacturing com-panies in Westmoreland, Fayette and Somerset counties. He was a man of great force of character, ever ready to adopt new methods if they are at all practicable, and kept abreast of the times in every way. He attained the high rank of Thirty-second degree, Scottish Rite, in Masonry. [HWC 1906 II, 258]
