General Notes: Husband - John Clugston Frederick

He received his primary education in the common schools, afterward attending the select school at Lewisville, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, under the tuition of the Rev. Dr. Ewing, later of the Blairsville Seminary. When only sixteen years of age he enlisted for three months' service in Company F, Fifty-seventh Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, which was called out in July, 1863, at the time of the battle of Gettysburg. The regiment was about Pittsburgh for a time and was then sent south to be in at the capture of John Morgan. After receiving his discharge from the three months' service Mr. Frederick re-enlisted, February 3, 1864, in Company C, Fourth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry, participating in all the engagements from the Wilderness to Appomattox. He was mustered out in July, 1865. After his return home he completed his education, and at the age of twenty entered the mercantile business in partnership with John Gilbert, at Lewisville, Indiana County, where he remained two years. From 1870 to 1873 he assisted his father in the labors of the farm, and in May, 1873, went to Irwin as engineer for the Penn Gas Coal Company at shaft No. 2, which position he held for fifteen years. In 1892 he was elected justice of the peace, in which office he served at least three terms, and beginning at his first election devoted himself solely to the duties of the office and to the care of various interests, among them those in real estate and insurance. He was burgess of Irwin, and served several times as school director. His adherence to the Republican party was lifelong. He was a charter member of Captain S. S. Marchand Post, No. 190, G. A. R., Irwin, of which he was three times commander and in which he served as quartermaster for over fifteen years. Although not a member of any church, he supported the Presbyterian, to which denomination his family belonged.
