General Notes: Husband - Valentine Smith Sutton

He had a beautiful farm property in Irwin Township, Venango County, PA, on the Pittsburgh pike thirteen miles southwest of Franklin, the county seat. It included the old homestead of his father, by whom it was purchased years before. His chief occupation was agriculture, with stock raising as the leading line, but he also utilized the other resources of his land, which was very rich in available wealth of various kinds.
He was reared at that home, living with his parents up to the age of twenty-five years. Meantime he obtained a good education in the local public schools and learned the details of agriculture, for which he found ample opportunity on the farm, his father having an extensive area under cultivation. When he married and started out for himself he located on a farm three quarters of a mile distant, but in 1897 he returned to the homestead, buying it from his brother Jerome. In 1899 he erected a large barn, and he extended the limits of the farm considerably, eventually having five hundred acres. He raised general crops, and paid particular attention to stock farming, keeping high-grade cattle of all kinds, including a fine flock of sheep numbering three hundred. Both gas and oil in paying quantities were found on his land, and he himself operated five gas wells which provided most of the supply needed at the State Institution at Polk. Six producing oil wells brought in a substantial income, but he left their operation to others, under lease. He was a Republican in political doctrine was a member of the Pleasant View M. E. Church.
