He was born on his father's farm in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, and his primary education was received in the district schools of that vicinity. He later moved to Venango County, where he purchased a farm and continued that occupation until death claimed him. He also worked at shoemaking and coopering, and in his latter years he conducted a store, while his sons operated the farm.
He was a soldier in the War of 1812: Cpt. Robinson's Co., Pa. Militia, 121st Regt., Wolf Creek Rangers
