He studied law with the Hon. Jeremiah H. Black, and was admitted to the Somerset County Bar, March 13, 1839. In 1851 he was elected President Judge of the 16th Judicial District, comprising the counties of Franklin, Fulton, Bedford and Somerset, in Pennsylvania, and won a high reputation on the Bench. After the expiration of his term, in 1862, he practiced his profession in Chambersburg until his death.
