He obtained his early education in the public schools, prepared for college at St. Paul's Academy, Concord, New Hampshire, entered Hobart College, whence he was graduated, class of 1894. He then took a course in business college and at once began an active business life. He was junior member of the banking house of Henry Hamlin & Son, later the Hamlin Bank & Trust Company, of which he was vice-president after the consolidation with other institutions. He was president of the Buhl Oil and Gas Company, with offices in Bradford, Pennsylvania; president of the United States Electric Company of New York City; vice-president of the Haines Flint Bottle Company, Smethport; director of the Allegany Window Glass Company of Port Allegany; director of the Empire Window Glass Company of Shinglehouse, Pennsylvania; president of the Clarence Stone & Lime Company of Clarence, New York, and director of the Smethport Glass Company.
His college fraternity was Kappa Alpha, Hobart; his clubs, the Country and Bradford of Bradford, Central of Smethport, Kanaddasaga of Geneva, New York, and the Republican of New York City. He was a member of the Masonic order, belonging to McKean Lodge, No. 388, Free and Accepted Masons; Bradford Chapter, No. 260, Royal Arch Masons; Trinity Commandery, No. 58, Knights Templar; Coudersport Consistory, thirty-second degree, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, and Zem Zem Temple, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, of Erie, Pennsylvania. He was also a member of Bradford Lodge, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. In politics he was a Republican, and was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, being vestryman of same.

He was also president of the Buhl Oil and Gas Company, with offices in Bradford, Pennsylvania; president of the United States Electric Company of New York City; vice-president of the Haines Flint Bottle Company, of Smethport; director of Great Southern Lumber Company of Bogalusa, Louisiana; director of the Alleghany Window Glass Company, of Port Allegany; director of the Empire Window Glass Company, of Shinglehouse, Pennsylvania; ex-president of the Clarence Stone & Lime Company, of Clarence, New York; director of Pressure Oil Company and had large holdings in other oil operations.
Mr. Hamlin is a member of his college fraternity, Kapa Alpha, of Hobart College; he also belonged to the Masonic order, being a member of McKean Lodge, No. 388, Free and Accepted Masons; Bradford Chapter, No. 260, Royal Arch Masons; Trinity Commandery, No. 58, Knights Templar; Coudersport Consistory, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, in which he held the thirty-second degree; and he belonged to Zem Zem Temple, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, of Erie, Pennsylvania.
