General Notes: Husband - Joseph Mathias


He received a common school education and farmed with his father until the age of eighteen, when he learned the carpenter trade, at which he worked until the age of twenty-one. He was associated with his father in the mill at Madison and came with him to Manor, in 1886 becoming a partner with his father and A. J. Good, a son-in-law of Jacob Mathias, and after the death of his father the business was conducted under the style of J. Mathias & Co. He was a man of excellent business qualities, and although conservative was yet fully imbued with the true spirit of enterprise. He was a staunch and loyal Democrat, and a member of Jeannette Lodge, No. 486, B. P. O. E., Manor Star Lodge, No. 1116, K. L. of H.
