He was of Scotch extraction. About 1790 he came to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, locating in Washington township. He was connected with the Presbyterian church and was the first justice of the peace in Westmoreland County.

BHCWC, 699 states that he had six children and then makes mention of seven.
