General Notes: Husband - John George Huffman

When a young man he migrated to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and settled in Franklin township, one mile from Harrison City, where he lived thenceforward. He was a wagon-maker, and followed that trade all his life. His shop was on his own property, where was also his residence. It was on this farm that his children were all born. His specialty was heavy wagons for farm use, and so well and substantially built were they, that his fame as a wagon-maker spread not only over his own county but also to adjoining counties. He took a great interest in education, and when the free school law was enacted, built the first schoolhouse in Franklin township. It was in Holtzer's district, was solidly constructed of large logs, and served its purpose well. He served many years as school director, also as collector of taxes. He adhered to the principles of the Democratic party, but having no taste for politics or liking for politicians, did not enter into public affairs to any extent. He was a strict teetotaler and believed in legal prohibition. He was one of those chiefly instrumental in building the Union Lutheran and German Reformed church, known as Manor church, of which he was for a number of years senior elder.
