He was born near Mercersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. His father removed to Harrisburg when James was in his twelfth year, and his early education was received in the old Harrisburg Academy; and at the age of nineteen was sent to Princeton College, where he graduated. He studied law with his brother in-law, Francis R. Shunk, and was admitted to the Dauphin County bar at the November term, 1828. He at first located at York, Pennsylvania, but afterwards removed to Greensburg, Westmoreland County. Upon his locating there he was appointed prosecuting attorney for that district, the duties of which position he discharged with integrity and ability. In 1881, he was sent to the Legislature and re elected in 1833 and 1838. In December, 1838, Samuel McLean, then Secretary of the Commonwealth, having been chosen United States Senator, Mr. Findlay was tendered the position by Governor Wolf, which he accepted, resigning his seat in the House. At the incoming of Governor Ritner's administration Mr. Findlay decided to locate at Pittsburgh, which he did, subsequently entering into law partnership with Francis R. Shunk, and the firm being successfully established when James Findlay died suddenly in his forty-second year. He never married. He was a man of versatile genius, of legal erudition, and of amiable disposition.
