General Notes: Husband - Henry B. Pershing

At the early age of nine years he was deprived of a mother's care, she passing away at that time, and for two or three years thereafter he resided with his uncle. He attended the common schools adjacent to his home, and at the age of twelve years began to earn his own living by hiring out to farmers, continuing in this way until he was twenty years of age. He then came to Greensburg, Pennsylvania, and entered the employ of Adam Stark in order to learn the trade of coach-maker, but the work not proving congenial to his liking, it being entirely too confining, he abandoned this and returned to farming, working five years for Edward Braden. After his marriage he began farming for himself on the farm of his former employer, where he remained five years, after which he purchased a plot of ground of four acres and began teaming, which occupation he followed until 1898. Thereafter he led a more or less retired life, acting as agent for the American Steel & Wire Company, and the Stewart Bros. Manufacturing Company, of Cincinnati, Ohio, manufacturers of iron fences. Mr. Pershing was appointed to act as guardian at various times, he having on one occasion to go to the state of Kansas to settle an estate. He was a member of the United Brethren church, in which he served as class leader, and of which he was trustee and steward for a number of years. Politically he affiliated with the Prohibition party, and was elected to the board of common council several times.

He and his first wife were the parents of four children, all of whom died in childhood.
