General Notes: Husband - Gilbert Lafayette Bulan Fetterman

He had General La Fayette for godfather, he being an intimate friend of the elder Fetterman and on a visit to America at the time of the birth of this child.

When the Marquis de Lafayette was visiting Pittsburgh in 1824 he stood sponsor at the baptismal font and gave him his name. The ceremony took place in the old Cathedral in Pittsburgh and was attended with much pomp, the Reverend Father McGuin officiating. General Lafayette was driven there in a carriage, and the way was strewn with flowers.

He received his classical education in Mount St. Mary's College, studied law in the office of Judge Baldwin, and was admitted to the bar in 1850. He was in partnership with his uncle, Nathaniel Plumer Fetterman, for some years, was prominent in his profession and noted for his ability as a speaker.
