General Notes: Husband - Hiram Washington Lane

He received his early education at the public schools of his native city and subsequently attended Edinboro State Normal School; after which he entered Iron City College at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from which he was graduated in 1866. He then embarked in mercantile business at Russell, keeping a general store in partnership with J. S. Briggs; this partnership was afterwards dissolved, and Mr. Lane continued alone for some time. He then removed to Warren, where he conducted a grocery business for about two years. After the death of his father in 1876, he disposed of his business and returned to Russell, taking charge of his father's business and operating the grist mill; he also operated another grist mill at Spartansburg, Pennsylvania, and continued in this business for the remainder of his life. He was a man of high standing in his community, progressive and prosperous; he built two fine residences in Russell. In his political views he was independent, and had no aspirations for office; in his religious convictions he was a Presbyterian. He was a member of Warren Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, also of the Encampment. He owned a library of many thousand volumes, the finest in Warren County.
