He received a common school education, and throughout the active years of his career gave his undivided attention to general farming which proved both a pleasant and remunerative means of livelihood. For many years he was an active and consistent member of the Presbyterian church, and served in the capacity of elder for eighteen years, the doctrines of which were inculcated in him during his early life, and his political affiliations were with the Republican party.
