He received a public-school education in Wayne township, Clinton County, Pennsylvania, and had charge of the homestead in partnership with his brother Jacob. He was also engaged in the manufacture of cigars, and was one of the successful business men of the locality. Like all the members of the family, he was a Democrat in politics, and held the office of school director. In religious faith he was a Methodist.
