He was a hatter with Jacob Zollinger, successor to Jacob Bucher. He was pre-eminent for his interest in religious affairs. He was one of the first-chosen deacons in the German Reformed congregation in 1814, when it separated from the Lutherans, and was an active committee-man in the erection of the new church in 1821.
