General Notes: Husband - James Purdy

He was born in Ireland, and came to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where he married, and in 1807 moved with his family to Robinson township, Allegheny County. About 1814 he moved to Findlay township, where he and his wife lived and died. He was in the War of 1812.

His parents and two sisters died on the ocean while coming to America, when he was but eleven years old. He landed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and remained with his aunt for some time; then went to Lancaster County, where he married. They moved to Allegheny County, near Mansfield, and died near Clinton, Pennsylvania.

In the year 1770, his father, his mother, and their three children, left their native land, Ireland, and embarked on a sailing vessel for America. His father, his mother, and two of his siblings, succumbed to the hardships of the trying voyage, and the only one to reach America was James Purdy, the third child, who arrived at Philadelphia in 1770, being at the time eleven years of age. For some time he lived there with an aunt, then went to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where his marriage took place. In 1808 he removed with his family to Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, locating near Mansfield, where he remained eight years. He then removed to a farm near Clinton, in the same county, following farming all this time. On this homestead his son Thomas, Thomas' widow and three children, lived many years.
James Purdy was a soldier during the war of the revolution, and was one of the heroes of Valley Forge. He gave all his children the best educational advantages that the times afforded.
