General Notes: Husband - Theophilus Graham

He was born on the old Graham homestead in Butler County, Pennsylvania, and passed his childhood and early youth in his native region. He attended the local public schools and upon completing his studies he began his active life as a farmer. At first he assisted his father with the latter's farm, but in the year of the Johnstown Flood he purchased the farm which was settled originally by William Cannon and afterwards owned successively by Mr. McQuiston and the Rev. James Davis. It was from the latter gentleman that Mr. Graham purchased it, the property containing ninety-one acres of excellent farm land.
In the month of August, 1862, Mr. Graham enlisted in Company D, One Hundred and Thirty-seventh Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, as a private, and with his regiment saw much active service. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant and was later honorably discharged. In the year 1864 he enlisted in the Seventy-eighth Veteran Regiment and had seven more months of active service with that body, which formed a part of the command of General Thomas.
After coming to Westmoreland County, Mr. Graham made himself active in many ways in that region and brought his farm up to a splendid state of productivity. In his religious belief Mr. Graham was a member of the United Presbyterian church. He was a Republican in politics, but was without ambition for political preferment or public office of any kind. Mr. Graham never allowed the associations formed by him during the Civil War to lapse, but became a prominent member of the Grand Army of the Republic.
