General Notes: Husband - Dr. Joseph Alison Reed


He studied in Washington, Pennsylvania, and afterwards in Philadelphia. After a long course of study of medicine he located in Allegheny City, and commenced the practice of his profession about 1844. After practicing for some time and proving especially skillful in his treatment of mental disease he was chosen for the head of the West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh. After seven years at the West Penn he was made head of the new Western Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane which had just been built at Dixmont, nine miles below Pittsburgh on the P. Ft. W. & C. R. R. He continued there as Superintendent and Physician in Charge for the rest of his life. After a faithful discharge of his duties for fourteen years, his health failed and for twelve months or more he was confined to his room, when death came and released him from his sufferings.
