Harry Exley
Harry Exley, 96, of Knox, died at 11:40 p.m. Friday in Allegheny Manor at Shippenville RD 1.
Born Feb. 13, 1897, in Bowling Green, Ohio, he was a son of the late William and Elizabeth Egar Exley.
He married the former Helen Weaver on Sept. 26, 1929. She survives. They were married 64 years this past September.
Mr. Exley had worked for Knox Glass for 44 years, retir­ing in 1966.
He was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Knox.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Albert (Deretha) Schmittlein of Slippery Rock; and a son, H. Fred Exley of Belle Vernon; seven grandchildren, Michael Schmittlein of Philadelphia, Marc Schmittlein of Centreville, Va., Cindi Schmittlein of Wilmington, Del., Suzi Schmit­tlein of Annapolis, Md., and Todd, Erin and Reed Exley, all of Belle Vernon; two great-grandchildren; and two brothers, John Exley and Homer Exley, both of Knox.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Kaber and Edna Switzer; and a brother, Walter Exley.
Friends were received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the William N. Rupert Mortu­ary in Knox.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the funeral home. Rev. Robert Suder, pas­tor of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, will officiate.
Interment will be in the Knox Union Cemetery.

Helen Marie Exley
Helen Marie Exley, 92, of Knox, a recent resident of Resi­dence at Hilltop in Monongahela, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, in Monongahela Valley Hospital.
Born Sept. 22, 1907, in Van, she was a daughter of Preston Ja­cob and Myrna Florin Rhoades Weaver.
Mrs. Exley retired as director of the cafeterias in the Keystone Area School District after 20 years of service.
She was a lifelong member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Knox where she had served as a Sunday school teacher. She was a charter member of the L.C.W. of the church.
Mrs. Exley was married Sept. 26, 1929, to Harry Frederick Ex­ley, who died Nov. 13, 1993, at the age of 96.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Deretha J. and Albert Schmittlein of Slippery Rock; a son, Harry Frederic Exley Jr., and his wife, June, of Belle Vernon; seven grandchildren, Michael Schmittlein of Devon, Marc Schmittlein of Leesburg. Va., Cyn­thia Schmittlein and Suzanne Manila, both of Wilmington, Del., and Todd, Erin and Reid Exley of Belle Vernon; and four great-grandchildren, Michael J., Alexan­der, Alexis and Jack Schmittlein.
She also is survived by three sis­ters, Doris McMillen of Knox, Jean Ralph of Cranberry and Esther "Bun" Berlin of Merrimack, N.H.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Exley was preced­ed in death by a sister, Isobel Fassler.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the William N. Rupert Mortuary in Knox.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home with the Rev. Gary Hilfiger, pastor of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, officiating.
Interment will be in the Knox Union Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Em­manuel Lutheran Church.

Open House to Honor Couple's Golden Event
KNOX -- Mr. and Mrs. Harry Frederick Exley of Knox will be feted at an open house in celebration of their golden wedding anniversary.
Their children and grandchildren will host the event from 2 to 4 pm Sunday, Sept. 23, in the social room of the Em­manuel Lutheran Church, Knox.
Helen Weaver and Harry F. Exley were married August 19, 1929, in St. Petersburg by Rev. J. Richard Booth.
They are the parents of two children, Mrs. Albert ( Deretha ) Schmittlein of Slippery Rock, and H. Frederick Exley of Belle Vernon. They have five grand­children.
The couple requests gifts be omitted.

Interestingly, their marriage license (Venango Co. #17917) states that they were married Sept. 26, 1929.
