General Notes: Wife - Lettice Work

Being among the oldest children, she nursed her younger brothers and sisters for quite a number of years, thus relieving her mother of a great deal of care. As she grew to womanhood, she became an adept on that ancient musical instrument, called a spinning wheel, and with other girls, as was their custom in those days, would shoulder her spinning wheel and go from house to house, thus preparing the thread with which to weave the fabric that clothed them. It was an arranged system that the girls in the neighborhood would meet and spin the wool and tow or flax, and when all was spun, that web would be sent to be woven, while they would go to the next house, and so one web of cloth after another would be woven in its turn.
The stranger was never turned hungry from her door, but many times old and dependent persons were given a home for a winter season and shared alike the comforts of her home. She, with the hearty cooperation of her spouse, took great interest in helping the fugitive slave, and would set refreshments before them at the hour of midnight, sending William or Thomas with them, (on the under ground railroad), to the next station.
Although she had children of her own, she was never found wanting in care or affection for the orphan, four of whom she took into her home.
