He was a native of the Conococheague valley, in what is now Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He and his brothers, James, Robert and Alexander, came to the vicinity of what was afterward McFarland's mill [Indiana County, Pennsylvania], in 1788.

He died when about eighty years of age.
